Kentucky Derby Viewing Party – May 7

El Cortez Hotel & Casino will host a viewing party for the Kentucky Derby inside the Fiesta Room on Saturday, May 7 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guests can enjoy all the pre-race festivities and cheer their favorite horses “down the stretch” while taking advantage of a special viewing party menu highlighted by $1 Budweiser drafts and $2 brats. Additional $1 menu specials for the viewing party will include fountain drinks and bags of chips. There will also be Bloody Marys available for $2.

All casino guests placing a bet of $20 or more on the Kentucky Derby at the El Cortez race book will also receive an official Kentucky Derby glass while supplies last. Limit two glasses per customer.

Vegas StrEATs Festival – May 14

El Cortez will host the Vegas StrEATs food-truck festival on the Jackie Gaughan Parkway from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturday, May 14. Vegas StrEATs will feature themed menu items at each food truck in May to coincide with Helldorado, which will be downtown from May 12-15. Each food truck will create a custom BBQ-themed dish exclusively for this Vegas StrEATs.

The event will also expand onto 6th Street in May to accommodate to increased demand from both street vendors and guests. Food trucks participating in the event include Slidin’ Thru, Muncheeze, Fukuburger, Sloppi Jo’s, Tasty Bunz, Haulin’ Ballz, Food Slingers, Snow Ono Shave Ice, Island Breeze, Cheesesteak Truck and more.

Presented by El Cortez, Slidin’ Thru and Insert Coin(s) VideoLounge Gamebar, Vegas StrEATs will bring food, live art and music to the Fremont East Entertainment District. Drink specials throughout the festival include $2 Bud and Bud Light draughts, $3 Jameson Irish Whiskey shots, $3 Jagermeister shots and $2 Pepsi products.

Throughout May, Club Cortez players winning a jackpot of $200 or more on a slot machine, a $200 or more jackpot on a video poker five-cent or lower denomination machine, a $300 or more jackpot on a video poker ten-cent or high denomination machine or a $200 or more jackpot on live keno will receive their choice of a free gift card from Walgreens, Smith’s, Walmart, Shell and Chevron. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo at El Cortez Hotel & Casino with $3 Patrón margaritas and complimentary chips and salsa on Thursday, May 5 from noon – midnight.

Mom’s Eat Free at The Flame Steakhouse – May 8

All mothers will eat free at The Flame Steakhouse when dining with a paying adult on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8. Mothers must be 21 years or older and a member of Club Cortez. All guests can reserve their table early at El Cortez.

Fresh Stone Crab Special – Ends Weekend of May 13

El Cortez Hotel & Casino guests will have their last chance until October to enjoy delicious, fresh jumbo Stone Crab at The Flame Steakhouse. The Flame Steakhouse features jumbo Stone Crab flown in fresh from Florida every week for the Friday and Saturday nightly dinner special. The Stone Crab special is available for only $28 per pound and is served with cottage fries and coleslaw.

Trout Amandine & Walleye Pike Special – Begins Weekend of May 20

The Flame Steakhouse features Idaho trout and Minnesota walleye pike flown in fresh every week for nightly dinner specials. Each special is only $16.95 and trout is available each week while supplies last.

Free White Castle in Honor of Memorial Day – May 30

El Cortez Hotel & Casino is serving free White Castle cheeseburgers to celebrate Memorial Day on Monday, May 30. Club Cortez members can enjoy free White Castle cheeseburgers while they play slots and table games, and the complimentary burgers will be served from noon to 6 p.m. White Castle is famous for their one-of-a-kind Slyder ®, which offers a delicious hamburger patty with White Castle’s signature steamed onions and cheese.

Cash is King Earning Month – May

The El Cortez will hold four Cash is King Drawings in 2011. The second drawing will be held on Saturday, June 18 at 3 p.m. Club members will received one entry ticket for every 5,000 points they earn throughout May. Please see Club Cortez for additional information.

During the week, entry tickets in the drawing can be earned during blackjack, roulette and baccarat. We were fortunate enough to attend the soft opening of Insert Coin(s) last night and wow, what a place!

“Whether you’re looking to just relax and have a beer, drop some coin(s), rent a console or simply dance to some Beats, Insert Coin(s) has just what you need.
With thousands of games to choose from, world-renowned DJs spinning beats and videos, comfortable couches and a bar. What more could you ask for?”

Walking into the establishment evoked a multitude of emotions. There was the initial awe of the space. Flat screens on every wall, a neon lit bar top, enormous(and trust me, unbelievably awesome) couches, and of course the games. Dozens of arcade style games, and every modern gaming system available. Instantly childhood memories flooded back of standing in an arcade trying to decide which machine to put my quarters in. As a child we were limited on play to what our parents deemed appropriate, and it was never enough. But at an arcade lounge bar you are able to play as long as you want. It’s high score time now! Throw in a a few drinks, great bartenders and cocktail waitresses and Insert Coin(s) has created a masterpiece.

Not into video games, no problem. They have a DJ and dance floor that kept the groove alive till early in the morning. And of course not to be forgotten is the art. The walls are painted by local artists in a manner that is consistent with the vibe of the lounge, vibrant and exciting. They also have artwork on display and for sale by artists, which Insert Coin(s) plans to donate their share of the proceeds to the Red Cross Japan Relief Fund.

With 70 years behind us, El Cortez has seen downtown Vegas change from one thing to another. The last few years have truly marked a revitalization to the area. We are thrilled to see trend-setting businesses like Insert Coin(s) joining the force that is breathing a new life into the city. Insert Coin(s) officially opens for business tomorrow(However there is a not so secret soft opening again tonight).

Did you know El Cortez has an old fashion barber shop? It’s a bit of a hidden gem, located just up the stairs off the game room floor. The art of the straight razor shave has been disappearing over the years as old fashion barbers are found less and less.

Ernesto Ortiz, resident barber at El Cortez has been mastering his craft since 1983. Originally from Arizona, Ortiz moved to Las Vegas in 1963 and has been at El Cortez for eight years now. Ortiz commented that “Now a days most people don’t have time for an old fashion shave, but I have customers that have been coming in on a regular basis for 20+ years.” We were lucky enough to see Ortiz in action and thank his satisfied customer for allowing us to take a few quick photos.

One of the things we pride ourselves on at El Cortez is our rich history. Seventy years and counting, El Cortez is still holding onto its’ vintage Vegas feel as it works to blend the modern world with classic Vegas. Last Saturday we held our second monthly Vegas StrEATs. First off we want to thank each and everyone of you that came out and braved the chilly weather. A huge pat on the back to all the vendors, artists, performers, and trucks for making this event successful. We love seeing everyone downtown and watching Las Vegas grow as a community. The amount of talent and culture that everyone has brought so far is truly remarkable. We can’t wait to see what you do with our town Las Vegas!
