The El Cortez management team welcomes guests to join them as they toast legendary casino owner Jackie Gaughan on his 92^nd birthday with a champagne and cake celebration at the property on Wednesday, Oct. 24 from noon to 6 p.m.  Guests may also visit the casino to sign a birthday card for the Las Vegas gaming pioneer in El Cortez’s The Parlour.

 

During his illustrious gaming career, Gaughan owned and operated numerous hotels and casinos throughout Las Vegas, including The Flamingo, Showboat Casino, Union Plaza Hotel & Casino, Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas Club Hotel & Casino, Gold Spike Hotel & Casino, Western Casino and El Cortez. At the height of his career, Gaughan owned a quarter of downtown Las Vegas real estate. Although he is now retired, his hard work, determination and unrivaled dedication to customer service  have made him one of the most respected gaming experts in town. Gaughan has set a standard that still survives in present day casinos.

 

“Mr. Gaughan is one of the few remaining Las Vegas pioneers and a man who I’m honored to call a mentor and friend,” said El Cortez General Manager Mike Nolan, who has worked with Gaughan since the 1970s. “I had the special privilege of having the ‘Jackie Gaughan way’ instilled in my work ethic, and not one decision is made here at El Cortez without first considering how Jackie would have done it.”

 

To this day, Gaughan’s influence can be seen throughout Las Vegas. Not only was he influential in bringing boxing to Las Vegas, but his gaming knowledge made him one of the city’s top experts when it came to slots. In fact, larger casinos would often test their new machines at El Cortez before bringing them to their own casino floors because of Gaughan’s knowledge.  With such an intimate and expert grasp of gaming, Gaughan also had a knack for finding top talent with some of today’s modern day gaming visionaries, such as Steve Wynn, who credit’s Gaughan for guiding their early careers in the industry.

 

Gaughan’s lasting legacy is best manifested at El Cortez where the penthouse remains his primary residence and the hotel-casinos outdoor plaza is named in his honor. Interaction with his beloved guests remains a part of his daily life even as Gaughan celebrates his 92^nd birthday and he can regularly be seen playing poker on El Cortez’s casino floor.

 

“Even while retired, Mr. Gaughan has been incredibly influential in shaping my career during the five years I have been here,” said El Cortez Executive Vice President Alexandra Epstein. “He always had this saying that what’s good for all of downtown will be good for El Cortez – even if it didn’t have a direct effect on the property in the short term. I think that mentality is a huge factor in our recent successes at El Cortez.”

El Cortez’s sports book is managed through Station Casinos and will feature the popular “$2 Million Great Giveaway Football Contest” and “Last Man Standing Pro and College Elimination Football Contests” throughout the 2012 football season.

 

With the “$2 Million Great Giveaway” contest, a $25 entry fee registers players to compete for their share of $2 million in total cash and prizes including the opportunity to win one of two Dunhill Homes, a new Chevrolet Camaro or Silverado truck, or as an alternative to a vehicle, a cash prize of up to $20,000. Over the 17-week NFL season, the “$2 Million Great Giveaway” will award a total of $30,000 in prizes each week to players with the most wins or losses.  The contestant who picks the most season winners or losers will win a new Dunhill home valued at $225,000 or $100,000 cash. The popular “Fiddle in the Middle” returns with total cash prize winnings of $200,000 for selecting the equal number of wins and losses for the entire season. There is a $25 fee per entry with no more than two paid entries per person allowed. Those who purchase two entries will receive a bonus third entry for free. Contestants may submit weekly picks for the “$2 Million Great Giveaway” with their Boarding Pass or Club Cortez card at El Cortez or any of the 15 Station Casinos’ sports book locations. For added convenience, easy-to-use computer kiosks at each location allow contestants to register their weekly picks 24-hours a day. Weekly standings may be checked online by heading to www.sclv.com/promotions. End of season results will be announced on January 7, 2013.

 

With the “Last Man Standing” elimination contests, contestants have the ability to win up to $200,000 in this year’s “winner takes all” event – available for both professional and college football. “Last Man Standing” is based on picking one winning football team against the contest line weekly. Selections will be made against the point spread listed on the weekly contest card and if it is a winning selection, that entry will remain in the contest for the following week. The fee is $25 per entry. Each contestant may purchase up to four entries total with a fifth entry for free for both contests. The prize money will be awarded to the last contestant remaining. If the weekly selection is a losing selection or a contestant fails to submit a weekly selection, that entry will be eliminated. There will be no ties and all games will be half point spreads. $75,000 will be the minimum guaranteed aggregate prize for the professional football contest and $25,000 will be the minimum guaranteed aggregate prize for the college football contest. One hundred percent of all entry fees will be returned as prize money. Thursday, Friday and Saturday college football games may be included. El Cortez is proud to join the Clean the World team as we work to reduce diarrheal disease. Clean the World Foundation, Inc. was founded in February 2009 by two individuals, Shawn Seipler and Paul Till.  Clean the World is a not-for-profit corporation under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code originally based out of Flordia. Their goal is to re-use the waste soap products from hotels in poverty stricken parts of the world.

Clinical studies have shown that something as simple as the use of bar soap can significantly reduce the risk of many diseases that are killing children daily. We estimate that we will be able to donate over 2 tons of soap a year in this effort, and look forward to our partnership with Clean the World and thank them for all they have done in their efforts.

Vegas StrEATs Festival – Saturday, April 14

El Cortez hosts the monthly Vegas StrEATs food-truck, arts and music festival on the Jackie Gaughan Parkway from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday, April 14. Many of Las Vegas’ favorite food trucks participate in Vegas StrEATs each month along with local art and clothing vendors from across the city. Free Slice of Fresh Marie Callendar’s Strawberry Pie– Saturday, April 14

El Cortez Hotel & Casino will serve free slices of fresh Marie Callendar’s strawberry pie for all Club Cortez members on Saturday, April 14 from noon to 6 p.m. Club Cortez members can enjoy the treat game side while playing slots and table games.

Fresh Stone Crab Special – Now through May

The Flame Steakhouse features jumbo Stone Crab flown in fresh from Florida every week for the Friday and Saturday nightly dinner special. The Stone Crab special is available for only $28 per pound and is served with cottage fries and coleslaw.

El Cortez Vintage Dining & Cocktail Menus

Due to popular demand, El Cortez Hotel & Casino will continue to offer their vintage dining and cocktail menus in 2012. The menus, created in 2011 to honor the property’s 70th anniversary, dust off Las Vegas’ old recipe books and reintroduce a few classic favorites. The selected dishes were some of the premier dining options featured at the town’s best restaurants in years past, including dishes from Sultan’s Table at the Dunes, Delmonico’s at the Riviera, The House of Lords at the Sahara, La Vie en Rose at the Desert Inn and Saver Room at the Aladdin. These iconic dishes will be available at the Flame Steakhouse every Tuesday through Thursday.

Vintage Dining Menu

Appetizers: Oysters Rockefeller, fresh shucked Kusshi oysters baked with fresh spinach, hollandaise sauce and Pernod; or Escargot a’la bourguignon, petit-Gris Escargot with garlic butter

Salads: Hearts of palm, Tender hearts of palm with lemon vinaigrette; or Asparagus salad, chilled asparagus, caper pimento vinaigrette

Entrees: Tournedos of beef Rossini, twin Filet Mignonettes, pan fried in butter, topped with pate Foie Gras and Madeira demi-glace; or Chicken Kiev, herb butter filled boneless breast of chicken, panko crusted and deep-fried

Vintage Cocktail Menu

The vintage cocktail menu will be served at The Parlour, located on El Cortez’s casino floor. This menu celebrates the history of mixology by educating guests on the origins of classic cocktails while offering a chance for them to enjoy their favorites. The menu includes cocktails such as the side car, which originated in the 1920s during World War I; the mint julep, which originated in the 1700s and is one of the country’s oldest cocktails; the blood and sand, a drink from the 1930 premiere of a Rudolph Valentino film; the aviation, a drink created in the 1910s by the head bartender at the Hotel Wallick in New York, and many more.

Unique Cocktails at El Cortez’s The Parlour

El Cortez serves three signature drinks at the recently opened The Parlour:

“The Scottie”: An eponymous drink for one of El Cortez’s most tenured bartenders, “The Scottie” combines Sky cherry vodka, Chambord, Triple Sec and splashes of cranberry and lime juice.
“Parlour Refresher”: This new concoction is great on a scorching Vegas summer day or when guests are longing for that summer feeling in the middle of winter. The “Parlour Refresher” is composed of Sky vodka, Blue Curacao, Midori, lemon juice and a splash of Sierra Mist.
“Fireside Manhattan”: The “Fireside Manhattan” is a drink sure to fit in with the Parlour’s warm rich tones and classic lounge feel. The drink is made of Original MOONSHINE and a float of sweet vermouth.

Café Cortez Dinner Specials

Visit Café Cortez for prime rib dinner for only $7.95. Meal includes choice of soup or salad. Café also offers a fajita dinner for just $8.95. Try the vegetarian offerings including a veggie burger, veggie fajita and veggie Chow Mein. Café Cortez also offers a full Chinese menu served from 4 to 10 p.m.
