Downtown Cares

October 26th, 2011 ecadmin No comments

El Cortez Hotel and Casino is teaming with other downtown businesses and organizations for “Downtown Cares Las Vegas,” a day of downtown volunteerism, on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Downtown Cares Las Vegas is being organized by Moonridge Group,  and volunteering efforts will be led by El Cortez along with a group of sponsors, including Zappos.com, the City of Las Vegas, the City of Las Vegas Fire and Rescue, the City of Las Vegas Metro Police Department, Whole Foods, 8 News Now, BLVDS and other businesses and arts organizations. All volunteers will come together to improve the Robert Gordon Senior Recreation Center at 336 N. 10th Street, Las Vegas, NV.

Event registration is from 9 to 10 a.m. followed by the day of volunteering at the recreation center. Volunteers can offer their services for a full- or half-day shift.

The 261 low-income seniors who use the Robert Gordon Recreation Center on a daily basis have created a “Wish List” that the volunteers will be working to fulfill throughout the day.  Remodeling and facility improvement initiatives, such as painting, collecting non-perishable foods, planting and gardening, improving the recreation areas, beautifying the patio area and upgrading the kitchen, will go a long way in making the recreation center more functional and enjoyable for the seniors.

Individuals who have questions, would like to donate items and/or want to register a team of volunteers can contact event coordinator Kathleen Foley at kfoley@moonridgegroup.com or 702.461.9656. The deadline to register for Downtown Cares Las Vegas is Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 5 p.m.

Downtown Cares Las Vegas will continue as a monthly volunteering effort in downtown Las Vegas and the surrounding areas. Future Downtown Cares Las Vegas volunteering events will be announced once projects are confirmed.

Downtown Moves Forward

October 11th, 2011 ecadmin No comments

For years we have been dedicated to the improvement of Downtown Las Vegas as well as our own property. We take pride in the idea that we are helping build something bigger than ourselves. When Emergency Arts was opened in our Fremont Medical building our hopes began to soar about what downtown was becoming. We also renovated The Ogden House (the motel not the new condominiums) and turned it into the Cabana Suites as we brought a little of South Beach to this downtown desert town. Our most recent project completion was the renovation of our lounge bar, which is now The Parlour. We look forward to carrying on Vegas StrEATs which occurs the Second Saturday of each month and brings out some of the best art and gourmet food trucks in town.

While we were doing our part plenty of other people, groups, and business have been doing more than their fair share as well. Newest to the scene are Downtown Cocktail Lounge, Vanguard, Insert Coin(s) and soon to open Le Thai. So many great attractions have really revitalized the life force on Fremont. We are also hugely excited about the Smith Center which will bring culture in the performing and visual arts, as well as act as another focal point in Downtown. Let’s not forget the biggest powerhouse on the scene pushing downtown towards a new era of prosperity. Zappos.com is relocating to the former city hall building and bringing a life to the community that no one else could offer. They are opening and promoting all types of business and pushing the arts and entertainment. Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh along with 3 other investors have also bought First Friday and with a great group like that behind the event, we know great things lie on the horizon. It is truly incredible to be around such wonderful changes. No other place in the world is as unique or has the honor of calling themselves The Entertainment District in Downtown Las Vegas!

Our newest project is the painting of the exterior of the property. We’ve been here for 70 years and it’s time for a facelift. The project started a few weeks ago and we’re moving ahead at full steam! Once again we want to thank all the business, groups, and people that have poured so much time, dedication and excitement into our community and we look forward to what lies ahead.

Viva Las Vegas!

El Cortez Cinema Competition

August 25th, 2011 ecadmin No comments

Tweet It: Call for entries now open for @ElCortezLV Cinema Competition! All local filmmakers encouraged to enter! #EC70 http://bit.ly/pQaSMt

El Cortez Hotel and Casino is hosting their first ever El Cortez Cinema Competition. The competition, co-hosted by Shoot To Kill Media, is a challenge to local filmmakers to produce an original short film, three to five minutes in length, that highlights not only El Cortez, but Vintage Vegas, and Downtown Vegas as well. We require a number of shots in the films to include El Cortez but that doesn’t mean the film has to be solely about El Cortez. We hope to receive a large variation in stories and film styles.

Every film must incorporate an element of El Cortez’s neon or classic signage. Also, all films must include shots of at least three of the following items: El Cortez Sports Book, table games, slot machines, The Flame Steakhouse, Café Cortez, El Cortez front desk, El Cortez valet, Cabana Suites lobby, Cabana Suites room, El Cortez main stairwell, El Cortez vintage room, The Parlour, an El Cortez bar, El Cortez tower room and/or El Cortez Jacuzzi suites.

The competition will run from Friday August 26 through Friday Octtober 21 with final submissions due to the El Cortez by 5 p.m. on October 21.  After submissions are received, up to 10 finalists will be selected to have their films screened during El Cortez’s 70th Anniversary grand celebration on Nov. 4.  Films will be viewed that night by the public and a judging panel with a winning film selected based on creativity, relevance to the theme, incorporation of required elements and composition. The winning film will be announced on November 4 following the viewings.  Prizes include a contract to produce a future El Cortez advertisement and a $250 video-equipment rental package from JR Lighting & Grip Las Vegas.

The $50 entrance fee into the competition will be donated in its entirety to Opportunity Village, a not-for-profit organization that serves people with intellectual disabilities. They provide them with vocational training, employment and social recreation services that make their lives more productive and interesting.

El Cortez Vintage Dining & Cocktail Menus

El Cortez Hotel & Casino continues the celebration of its storied past by introducing vintage dining and cocktail menus in honor of its 70th anniversary. Throughout 70 years, El Cortez has gone through several menu overhauls at its dining establishments. To fuel guests’ excitement for the anniversary, the historic hotel-casino has decided to dust off some of Las Vegas’ old recipe books and reintroduce a few classic favorites. The dishes selected were some of the premier dining options featured at the town’s best restaurants in years past, including dishes from Sultan’s Table at the Dunes, Delmonico’s at the Riviera, The House of Lords at the Sahara, La Vie en Rose at the Desert Inn and Saver Room at the Aladdin. After spending weeks to once again perfect the iconic dishes, El Cortez’s chefs proudly present the vintage dining menu at The Flame Steakhouse (full menu listed in ongoing food and beverage promotions) throughout 2011.

The cocktail menu will be served at all casino bars throughout 2011. This menu will celebrate the history of mixology by educating guests on the origins of classic cocktails while offering a chance for them to enjoy their favorites. The menu will include cocktails such as the side car, which originated in the 1920s during World War I; the mint julep, which originated in the 1700s and is one of the country’s oldest cocktails; the blood and sand, a drink from the 1930 premiere of a Rudolph Valentino film; and the aviation, a drink created in the 1910s by the head bartender at the Hotel Wallick in New York.

El Cortez’s Facebook Photo Competition for No-Mas Commemorative T-Shirts

El Cortez is now launching the T-shirt photo competition, asking customers to submit pictures wearing the vintage T-shirts in their favorite locations. To enter, individuals can post a picture on El Cortez’s Facebook page. The winner will be announced at the end of August and will receive a 2-night stay in one of El Cortez’s unique Design-A-Suite rooms. The shirts are available in the El Cortez gift shop, the No Mas website and a select group of retailers, including Colette in Paris.
