Classic Cocktails

In conjunction with the launch of our Vintage Menu we thought it only appropriate to create an equally nostalgic Classic Cocktail Menu. These signature drinks are available at all three of the casino bars as well as at The Flame Steakhouse.

The drinks and some history:

Mojito: Early 19th century La Bodeguita del Medio
Bacardi Light Rum, fresh squeezed lime juice, rock candy syrup, mint leaves & a splash of club soda

Side Car: First Mentioned in 1922, WW1
Christian Brothers Brandy, Cointreau and fresh Sweet & Sour

White Lady: Around 1929 Harry’s Bar in Paris
Plymouth Gin, Cointreau & fresh lemon juice

French 75: Around WW1
Plymouth Gin, fresh lemon juice & Simple Syrup topped with champagne

Mint Julep: 1700 Kentucky, one of the earliest cocktails
Bulleit Courbon, rock candy syrup & mint leaves

Mai Tai: 1944 Victor Bergeron at Trader Vic’s
Myers Dark Rum, Bacardi Gold, Orange Curacau, Orgeat Syrup, rock candy syrup & fresh lime juice

Margarita: 1936 Danny Negrete, Puebla Mexico * 1942 Pancho Morales, El Paso * 1948 Margare Sames
Patron Silver Tequila, organic Agave Nectar, Triple Sec, fresh lemon juice & fresh lime juice

Blood and Sand: 1930 for a Rudolph Valentino Film Premier
Jhonnie Walker Red, Luxardo Morlacco Cherry Liqueur, Cinzano Sweet Vermouth & orange juice

Stone Sour: A sour is a traditional family of drinks, the addition of orange juice to a regular Sour makes it a “Stone Sour.” First described by Jerry Thomas in his 1862 book, How to Mix Drinks
Jameson Irish Whiskey, fresh sour & orange juice

Singapore Sing: 1910-1915 Raffles Hotel by Ngian Tong
Tanqueray Gin, Luxardo Morlacco Cherry Liqueur, Cointreau, Benedictine, pineapple juice, lime juice, Grenadine & bitters

Gin Fizz: A Fizz is a type of mixed drink. The first printed reference to a fizz (spelled “fiz”) was in the 1887 edition of Jerry Thomas’ Bartender’s Guide
Plymouth Gin, fresh lemon juice & Simple Syrup, topped with club soda

Brandy Alexander: Supposedly created at the time of the wedding of Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood and Viscount Lascelles, in London, in 1922
Christian Brothers Brandy, Creme de Cocoa Dark & cream

Daiquiri: Invented around 1900 in a bar named Venus In Santiago
Bacardi Light Rum, fresh lime juice & rock candy

Aviation: Around 1916, created by Hugo Ensslin, head bartender at the Hotel Wallick in New York
Plymouth Gin, Luxardo Maraschino Luiqueur, Simple Syrup & fresh lemon juice

Old Fashion: The first alleged use of the specific name “Old Fashioned” was for a Bourbon whiskey cocktail in the 1880s, at the Pendennis Club, a gentlemen’s club in Louisville, Kentucky
Wild Turkey 80, slice of orange, Maraschino cherry, sugar cube, Angostura Bitters & a splash of water


Vintage Menu

In 70 years of service El Cortez has had quite the variety of menu options. With the celebration of out 70th anniversary we decided dust off our older recipe books and pull out some classic favorites. The dishes we picked are some of Las Vegas’ classics and were featured at the town’s best resturants in years gone by. Restaurants such as Sultan’s Table at the Dunes, Delmonico’s at the Riviera, The House of Lords at the Sahara, La Vie en Rose at the Desert Inn and Saver Room at the Aladdin, all of whom gave us some of the best dishes this town has seen.

Appetizers

OYSTERS ROCKEFELLER
Fresh shucked Kusshi Oysters baked with fresh spinach, hollandaise sauce and pernod

ESCARGOT A’LA BOURGUIGNONNE
Petit-Gris Escargot with garlic butter

Salads

HEARTS OF PALM
Tender hearts of palm with lemon vinaigrette

ASPARAGUS SALAD
Chilled asparaguse, caper pimento vinaigrette

Entrees

TORNADOES OF BEEF ROSSINI
Twin Filet Mignonettes, pan fried in butter, topped with pate Foie Fras and Madeira demi-glace

CHICKEN KIEV
Herb butter filled boneless breast of chicken, panko crusted and deep-fried

Desserts

STRAWBERRIES ROMANOFF
Fresh hulled strawberries macerated in Cointreau and orange juice. Served with fresh whipped cream and ice cream

PEACH MELBA
Peach halves over vanilla ice cream topped with fresh raspberry puree
